The Original Disk Mount applet is the same GNOME panel applet that was in GNOME 2.8.x, but renamed and installable in GNOME 2.10.

The current version is 2.10.0 - June 15, 2005

What's wrong with the disk mount applet in GNOME 2.10?

The disk mount applet in GNOME 2.10 is a complete rewrite over the one in GNOME 2.8 (upon which the Original Disk Mount applet is based). The new version will in fact autodetect your removable devices, however that is the only improvement. The new GNOME 2.10 version drops the ability to choose which devices you want visible on your panel; it is either all of them as a group, or none at all. It also does not allow you to choose the icon for display, and they all look the same! The icon for the floppy disk looks the same as the cdrom looks the same as the usb flash drive - and they can not be changed.

Will this conflict with the existing applet in GNOME 2.10?

No, it uses a slightly different name to avoid conflicting with the official applet. This applet installs to GNOME 2.10 as it's own application. After installation it will appear in the add applet dialog as "Disk Mounter (the original)".
